Inmate Dies While in MDC Custody

Bernalillo County, N.M. – Despite rigorous life-saving efforts, a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) inmate died after being treated at UNM Hospital.

The deceased individual has been identified as Violet Denetso, age 44. On Saturday at approximately 7:12 a.m., a medical code was called after Denetso reported experiencing severe stomach pain. MDC staff and the UNM Hospital medical team immediately responded, and the inmate was moved to medical housing for direct observation and care. After continued care and evaluation, it was determined by UNM Hospital staff that Denetso’s care would need to be transferred to UNM Hospital. Denetso was transported by ambulance to UNM Hospital at approximately 10:44 a.m. She passed away approximately 12 hours later at 10:50 p.m. Denetso’s next of kin has been notified.

Denetso had a criminal record dating back to 2002 ranging from drunk driving to resisting and evading police.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death. In accordance with standard operating procedure, the incident is pending investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO.

    When is it going to stop. No one in custody should lose their life.

    Several have been female..
    The quality care of persons in custody at this location should be investigated.
