One Dead, One Injured in Rollover Crash on I-25SB Off-Ramp Near Montaño

Albuquerque –

At approximately 4:20 PM, a motor vehicle crash was reported on the off-ramp from southbound Interstate 25 (I-25) just before Montaño. The vehicle reportedly rolled over, injuring both occupants. Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Albuquerque Police Department responded to the scene.

AFR initially transported two people to a local hospital. At time of transport, one person reportedly had grave life-threatening injuries, while the other was said to have serious but not immediately life-threatening injuries. While being taken to the hospital, the passenger died from their injuries.

The Albuquerque Police Department’s Motors Unit has been called to investigate the crash. The off-ramp from southbound Interstate 25 to westbound Montaño is currently closed. As of this publication, it is believed that I-25 southbound is still open.

On Sunday, September 7th at 9:20 PM, we received the following update from APD:

On 9/7/2025 around 16:16 hours, officers were dispatched to the area of southbound Pan American Freeway NE and Montano Rd NE in reference to a fatal single vehicle crash.  The front passenger died on scene.  The driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition.  The Fatal Crash Unit responded to the scene to investigate.

Through the investigation it was discovered that a silver Toyota RAV4 was traveling south on southbound Pan American Freeway in the center lane.  Just north of the intersection with Montano, the vehicle went right across traffic and exited the roadway over the curb.  The vehicle then went airborne off the embankment and crash off the roadway.  The crash is currently under investigation.
