On May 11, 2025, at around 1:15 PM, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue were dispatched to a serious injury crash at the intersection of Menaul Blvd. NE and Chelwood Park Blvd. involving a truck and two pedestrians. As we reported to you yesterday, when officers arrived, one pedestrian sustained grave injuries and was not responding when transported. AFR radio traffic suggested that patient may have been receiving CPR. Reports indicate the other pedestrian suffered a serious extremity injury and paramedics transported them to the hospital for further medical treatment.

Due to the nature of the injuries sustained by the pedestrians, APD’s Fatal Crash Team was called to the location and streets were closed to conduct an investigation.

At 4:51 PM on Sunday, APD stated the individual with grave injuries was in critical condition. While the person with the extremity injury was in serious condition.

On Monday, May 12, APD released information from the investigation which states:

“It was reported that a truck making a left turn had struck a male and a female pedestrian while they were walking in the crosswalk. One of the pedestrians was reported to be in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1990 Dodge pickup was traveling northbound on Chelwood Park Blvd. NE and stopped at a red light at the intersection with Menaul Blvd NE. When the light turned green, the driver proceeded to make a left turn to head westbound on Menaul Blvd.

While the truck turned, the two pedestrians were crossing from north to south on the west side of the intersection. The driver of the Dodge pickup did not see the pedestrians and inadvertently struck them. Video surveillance was available and confirmed the information provided to investigators.

The male pedestrian sustained critical injuries, and today passed away as a result of his injuries. The female pedestrian sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The primary contributing factor appears to be the driver’s failure to yield to the right of way. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.”

Authorities have not released additional information about this incident, but we will provide updates if more details become available.
