Albuquerque – APD detectives have charged Zachary Babitz for the July 31, 2024, robbery of a Wells Fargo bank in Northeast Albuquerque. Babitz has also been identified by Santa Fe police as the suspect of their homicide investigation in which an elderly man was murdered during a carjacking on Aug. 6. Babitz has been accused of killing Gordon Wilson who was in the Best Buy parking lot when Babitz shot him.
According to a criminal complaint, Babitz went into the Wells Fargo Bank wearing a black baseball cap, a red shirt, blue jeans and black backpack. He handed a note to the teller that said “you have 30 seconds, No dye, no bait or GPS. I will check. All 100s, 50s, 20s. Smile, no sudden movements.“ Babitz got away with over $3,000 worth of cash according to the complaint.
Babitz left the note on the counter and exited the bank to a getaway bicycle. While on his getaway mountain bike, he fell off it and dropped some cash in the parking lot where he abandoned the bike. APD officers eventually arrived on scene but were not able to locate Babitz.
The criminal complaint does not state if APD called the FBI to take over the bank robbery case or at least assist in helping find Babitz before he went on to commit the Santa Fe murder.
APD Robbery detectives got a break in the case when Santa Fe Police detectives started investigating the murder of Gordon Wilson. In the murder criminal complaint, Babitz’s wife stated he cut off his GPS ankle monitor and left a note:
“To: Law enforcement this needs to be very clear. My wife had absolutely no clue as to what I palanned or am about to do. These were my decisions, and I hid them from her.” Signed this day 8-1-24 10:55 am Zachary Babtiz.”
The GPS ankle monitor data did show Babitz near and inside the bank he robbed on July 31st. On August 6th, after Babitz murdered the beloved Gordon Wilson, Babitz headed to Albuquerque’s International War Zone district to meet up with known associates. Police did find Wilson’s SUV in Albuquerque near an apartment Babitz frequently hung out at. A known associate of Babitz told detectives that Babitz shot Wilson because Wilson tried to grab the gun. The associate said Babitz told him: “did something in Santa Fe and shot someone.”
We reached out to APD for comment to see if they notified the FBI of the July 31st, 2024 bank robbery. It is their internal policy that they will not respond to queries from ABQRAW staff.
We did reach out to the Albuquerque FBI field office for comment and they confirmed that the FBI was aware of the bank robbery:
“I can confirm that the FBI was aware of the bank robbery and responded alongside APD at the time that it occurred. We have been in close contact with APD and SFPD. As with all cases, the FBI is poised to review any additional incidents our partners may develop to suggest a violation of federal law and will assist in any wat that we can. Since it is still an ongoing investigation, I cannot comment further,” said Margot Cravens Public Affairs Office of the FBI Albuquerque Division
Babitz is considered armed and dangerous and people are urged to call 911 if they know his location. Law enforcement advises not to approach him.
Just look at this… creature. Why keep this piece of shit around, seriously? What positive contribution will it EVER make to civilized society? JUST KILL IT!
How much time does the typical felon like that receive, especially here in “Tomorrow Land?” How much time do they normally do for similar crimes?
You guys didn’t write a follow up article about him getting arrested?
Or really anything that happened yesterday??
