Albuquerque –

After 5pm on Tuesday, December 9th, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department and emergency crews from Albuquerque Fire Rescue were dispatched to the area of Central Ave SE and San Mateo Blvd after it was reported that someone had been shot.

Upon their arrival, they located an individual with at least one gunshot wound. The person was transported to a local area hospital but their condition is not known.

APD has southbound San Mateo closed from Copper Ave to Central. Additional road closures are possible as the APD investigates.

It is not yet known whether a suspect was taken into custody or what the motive for the shooting was. We have reached out to APD for additional information.

If more is learned about this incident, we will update you.

UPDATE:

Detective Chase Jewell stated the “injuries are said to be stable and non critical.” Detectives are still working to investigate the cause.

UPDATE 2:

As of 7:26 PM, APD officers and crime scene investigators have cleared from the area. Lanes of traffic should be back open.

UPDATE 3:

Detective Jewell informed us that based on preliminary information, APD officers believe the gun in this shooting fell out of someone’s pants, fired a round at some point, and the bullet struck a person.

Detective Jewell stated it’s possible the shooting will be ruled accidental.
