UPDATE: New Details Emerge from Deadly Police Shooting that Left APD SWAT Officer Wounded

Around 3:30PM, APD’s civilian PIO informed the media that the SWAT team had been activated to take an individual into custody in the area of 557 Tramway Blvd. NE. Officers were trying to arrest a man who had an active arrest warrant. The suspect was barricaded inside an Copper Ridge Apartment complex and he was refusing orders to surrender peacefully. The Copper Ridge Apartments have been the scene of many violent incidents, including at least one homicide this year.

We have learned from Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina that the officer who was shot is in good spirits and was with family at the hospital receiving care. Chief Medina confirmed the officer was part of APD’s SWAT unit.

We started hearing reports from witnesses that said APD’s SWAT team was calling out a suspect by the name of Emmanuel Galaviz Campos. The suspect was wanted for felony aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

Around 5:10pm, witnesses said an officer from APD’s and New Mexico State Police SWAT teams engaged the suspect and shots were fired by the suspect and an unknown officer. Witnesses said they saw an officer being loaded into an ambulance and the ambulance left the scene. According to eyewitnesses, the officer appeared to be shot in the arm.

While on scene we saw SWAT tactical vehicles at the east end of the apartment complex focused on a lower level apartment unit. A mattress was on a patio with one of the tactical units facing the residence and to the left was a body blocker indicating the suspect died outside the apartment unit.

This is the 4th officer involved shooting (OIS) across the state of New Mexico in the last 3 days.

At 6:06PM, the New Mexico State Police Posted on Twitter that they were involved in an officer involved shooting at 557 Tramway Blvd. NE. This was Albuquerque’s 83rd homicide for 2023.
