Albuquerque –
Currently, Albuquerque Police Department homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting at the Ridge Apartment Complex located at 557 Tramway Blvd NE. This set of apartments previously had the name Copper Ridge Apartments but has evidently undergone a renaming.
Authorities have confirmed the death of one individual, and they currently have another individual in custody. Detectives are actively examining the events preceding the shooting.
This complex is no stranger to violence and death. A gunshot victim was discovered dead in a car on November 18, 2021. On August 7th, 2022, there was a fight which turned into a fatal shooting. There was a reported murder at this complex on June 20, 2023. On July 21, 2023, there was a police standoff at the Copper Ridge complex, which subsequently turned into an officer involved shooting. The New Mexico State Police killed the suspect after he shot an APD officer. Lastly, on January 7, 2024, APD investigated a “suspicious death” at the Copper Ridge Apartments. The cause of death on this individual is still pending with the Office of the Medical Investigator.
This marks the second fatal shooting in the Albuquerque Metro area in less than 12 hours. Last night, an unidentified assailant shot a man and a woman at the Cinnamon Tree Apartments. The male victim died from his injuries at the hospital. APD is still purportedly searching for the offender.
We have a reporter headed to the scene to try and gather more information.
UPDATE:
According to APD, this shooting is being investigated as a justifiable homicide. An 18-year-old male said he shot his mother’s ex-boyfriend in self-defense as the armed man threatened to kill family members.
