Albuquerque –
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and city leaders were scheduled to have a press conference today at 10:00 AM at the Los Altos Lofts with them celebrating the expansion of their affordable housing program. The e-mail dubbed it as:
“The media are invited to hear from a resident of the city’s first motel to affordable housing conversion, Los Altos Lofts, which created 90 affordable housing units and has maintained full occupancy since opening.“
But, the press conference was cancelled moments before due to the latest Albuquerque Police Department officer-involved shooting at the same location. According to APD, they were dispatched multiple times during the early morning in regards to a naked woman having a mental health episode and holding knives. The first few times they could not locate the female but an employee from the Los Altos Lofts called again.
“When officers arrived, they made contact with the caller, who advised them that she had taken two knives away from the female who was now inside of her apartment. She advised that the apartment was around the corner as officers were still making contact with management. They observed a female come out and she had a knife in her hand,” said Deputy Chief Cecily Barker
According to Deputy Chief Barker, when officers were dispatched again around 9:00 AM, the female ran toward officers with a knife while they tried to give her commands to drop it. At least one officer then fired his weapon at the naked armed woman. The female was transported to UNMH where she died of the resulting gunshot.
Chief Barker went on to say the female was admitted to the hospital for mental health issues just last Friday. We asked if she was a resident of the city owned property and the Deputy Chief confirmed she was a resident.
One media source asked if the press conference would be re-scheduled.
“There will not be a presser right now. Obviously. But we will be following up with, that information at a later time,” said Deputy Chief Barker
The Multi-Agency Task Force will investigate this shooting and APD will have a press conference in a month or so with a media presentation from this shooting.
This is the 12th APD officer-involved shooting for 2025, with nine being fatal.
