At least two drivers on I-40 Westbound have contacted us, reporting that they saw a body lying in the lanes of traffic. We’ve reached out to both the NMSP and APD for more information on the situation.

We are working to confirm the details, but for now, all westbound traffic must exit at Carlisle. You can go to NMROADS.com for updated road info.

UPDATE:

Both the NMSP and APD confirmed that the NMSP is overseeing the investigation.

APD’s Public Information Officer (PIO) Gilbert Gallegos stated, “NMSP is involved and MATF is going to investigate.” The NMSP’s PIO Officer Wilson Silver said “we are handling this incident, and we are waiting on more details so we can confirm what occurred.”

UPDATE @3:40PM:

I-40 westbound is still closed at Carlisle. Traffic is now backed up to Juan Tabo.

Another accident was reported near I-40 and Washington around 3:50 PM

Drivers are advised against attempting to drive up the left or right shoulders of I-40 to bypass traffic delays. First responders, Police Service Aides, and New Mexico National Guard units are stationed on the shoulders, posing a risk of collision if you attempt to bypass the delays.

UPDATE @ 4:35 PM

All lanes were still blocked as of this update. We have no additional updates.

UPDATE @ 5:53 PM

The NMSP has reopened I-40WB at Carlisle.
