A man who was critically injured in a baseball bat attack in southeast Albuquerque last week has died, and the case is now being investigated as a homicide.

Officers with the Albuquerque Police Department responded around 5 AM on June 11 to a report of a person who was beaten near a smoke shop at 116 San Pedro Dr. SE. Upon their arrival, officers found 46-year-old Dwayne Burwell in critical condition, having sustained life-threatening head injuries after being struck by a baseball bat.

Burwell was transported to a local hospital, where he later died on June 14 from his injuries, according to police.

The investigation into the beating remains ongoing. The Albuquerque Police Department has not disclosed any information regarding the identification or apprehension of any suspects following Burwell’s death.
