Wilson’s girlfriend called 911 at 4:38 p.m. to report that Wilson beat her and refused to let her leave her home that day.

Officers later met with the woman, who had escaped and drove to a nearby store where she called police.

The woman initially met with deputies and was evaluated by medical personnel in the parking lot of a store where she escaped to get away from her boyfriend. APD officers later met with the woman at the parking lot, located at Bridge Blvd. and Goff Blvd., S.W.

She told officers that Wilson lived with her at her home in the 6200 block of Gonzales Rd., S.W. She said Wilson had been drinking alcohol all day and became violent with her. She said Wilson beat her, choked her and hit her with a closed fist two or three times. She also said Wilson hit her in the face with a phone and threw it at her head.

She later told detectives that she left the house and ran toward a neighbor’s home, but Wilson forcefully grabbed her from behind and dragged her back to the house.

The girlfriend snuck away the house and got to safety, where she called 911. While she was away, she received several phone calls and text messages from Wilson, who threatened to kill her.

She told police Wilson was a convicted felon and he was armed with a handgun.

Officers’ contact with Wilson

Officers tried calling Wilson several times, but he did not answer. They eventually parked a police vehicle in front of the home around 7 p.m. and made public address announcements, announcing their presence and calling for Wilson exit the residence.

Wilson first walked out of the front door of the home at 7:02 p.m. He was not armed and appeared to follow commands. He walked back into the house a minute later. Officers explained that he was detained and not free to leave.

Wilson exited and re-entered the home several times during the 22 minutes the officers were in front of the residence. A sergeant attempted to de-escalate the encounter while they spoke with Wilson.

At 7:08 p.m., Wilson walked out of the house and officers observed that he had a handgun in his waistband. Officers immediately gave commands for Wilson not to put his hands near his waistband. They warned him he would be shot if he reached for the gun.

The sergeant directed the officer to use less-lethal munitions against Wilson if he exited the house again and his hands were up and away from the gun.

Wilson remained inside the house for eight minutes and exited again at 7:17 p.m., still armed with the handgun. He continued to disregard officers’ commands and grabbed grocery bags to take inside the home.

Between 7:19 and 7:22 p.m., Wilson said he wanted to talk to his wife, while officers repeatedly told him not to reach for the gun. Officers emphasized they wanted to talk to him, but they couldn’t continue to do so while he was armed with a gun. Wilson said he didn’t want to go back to prison and talked about suicide.

At 7:22 p.m., Wilson grabbed the handgun from his waistband and pulled it upward. An officer fired two rounds at Wilson, striking him once.

The officers took Wilson into custody and performed first aide until paramedics arrived to transport him to the hospital. Wilson remains in this hospital. He will be booked into the Metro Detention Center when he is released by doctors.

Investigation

Over the next several months, APD will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will continue interviewing any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests. The Multi-Agency Task Force will forward its case to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.
