Juan Ortega, 40, died on Thursday at a residence in the 6000 block of Dennison Rd., S.W. Investigators found narcotics near Ortega’s deceased body. He was recovering from a gunshot wound suffered on July 3, 2026, during a confrontation with another man in the area of Central Ave. and 3rd St., N.W.

In a social media video, it shows Ortega confront and push a man by the name of Stephen Griego on a scooter. Griego reaches for his waistband for a gun and fires shots. The camera person retreats and the video does not show the aftermath of APD officers firing at Griego.

The confrontation on July 3 between Ortega and Stephen Griego, 41, led to a shooting that injured Ortega and another man. Several APD officers who were patrolling Downtown immediately responded to the shooting. Officers shot Griego, killing him.

A fourth man was also struck by gunfire about a block away from the shooting. That bystander was treated at a hospital and later released.
