There is an incident on Interstate 40, causing the closure of all lanes of both east and westbound traffic at mile marker 171. As a result, police are directing traffic off Interstate 40 at Carnuel. I-40 is completely closed from the 171 to 175.

This is an active situation and there’s a possibility of further closures due to this incident. We’ll update you as soon as we have more information.

UPDATE @ 5:45 PM:

Officials have confirmed that a deputy has been injured and that emergency response efforts are currently underway. Out of respect for the deputy and their family, authorities are asking that no information, images, or speculation be published or broadcast at this time.

While acknowledging the public’s interest in the incident, officials from BCSO emphasized their commitment to transparency and stated that an official update will be provided as soon as information is verified and appropriate for release.

Additional details are expected to be shared when they are available from BCSO.

UPDATE 2 @ 5:40 PM:

I-40 eastbound is now closed at Tramway (mile marker 167). I-40 westbound is still closed at Tijeras/NM-14 (mile marker 175). See applicable updates below photos….

Interstate 40 eastbound has been reopened per NMRoads. Interstate 40 westbound is still closed at Tijeras/NM-14 (mile marker 175).

UPDATE @ 11:40PM:

The procession for the fallen BCSO sergeant began on I-40 westbound at the 170 (Carnuel Exit) and traveled through the city via I-40 to I-25 to the Office of the Medical Investigator. The procession ended around 11:50 PM.

As per the NMDOT signage, Interstate 40 westbound remains closed as of 11:40 PM, as the investigation into the incident that claimed the life of the BCSO Sergeant is still ongoing.

UPDATE @ 12:40 AM on Feb. 24:

At a press conference held around 12:30 AM, BCSO identified their fallen Sergeant as Sergeant Michael Schlattman.

UPDATE @ 3:40AM on Feb. 24:

As of 3:40 AM, the NMDOT signage on Interstate 40 westbound says I-40 westbound remains closed at MM 175 (Tijeras).

Please check NMROADS.com for additional updates, and select the dynamic signs box on the left side. From there, you can navigate to the map and check the dynamic signs near NM 14 or Tijeras to see if westbound traffic has been reopened. Updates posted below photo…

BCSO posted on X that:

“One lane of I-40 westbound at the Carnuel Exit has reopened to through traffic. We hope to open remaining lanes as soon as possible but for now, expect single lane traffic and delays near that 170 exit.”

UPDATE @ 6:56 AM on Feb 24:

At 6:56 AM, BCSO posted on X that all lanes of westbound traffic on I-40 were open.
