Albuquerque –
Today, the Albuquerque Police Department identified the armed suspect who was shot by police on Sunday following a domestic violence incident in Southwest Albuquerque.
Dwayne Wilson, a 53-year-old man, was shot once in the abdomen after he pulled a gun from his waistband in front of a home located on the 6200 block of Gonzales Rd. SW. The shooting took place on Sunday at 7:22 p.m. as APD officers were attempting to de-escalate the situation and persuade Wilson to put away his handgun and surrender to them.
Wilson was taken to the hospital after the shooting. According to APD, Wilson is in critical but stable condition.
Detectives have since charged Wilson with multiple violent crimes stemming from the domestic violence confrontation that unfolded before officers arrived.
Officers were initially dispatched to the residence in response to a domestic violence call involving Wilson and his girlfriend. The woman told officers that Wilson had been drinking and became physically violent. She alleged Wilson threw a cellphone at her head, punched her multiple times and choked her with both hands for about 10 seconds, which prevented her from breathing (asphyxiation).
She also reported to police that Wilson restrained her from leaving the bedroom by wrapping an arm around her waist and digging his thumbnail into her hand for several minutes. After she left the room, Wilson allegedly kicked a glass-top table that struck her leg.
According to APD, the woman attempted to flee to a neighbor’s home, but Wilson grabbed her from behind and dragged her back into the house. She later managed to escape and call 911 from a safe location. While away from the residence, she allegedly received calls and text messages from Wilson threatening to kill her.
Responding officers made contact with the girlfriend and determined they had probable cause to arrest Wilson.
APD officers went to the home on Gonzales Rd. where they made public address announcements. After several attempts to get Wilson to surrender peacefully. Wilson allegedly entered and exited the house at least once while armed before the officer-involved shooting. Wilson grabbed the gun from his waistband and he was shot by the officer.
Wilson is being charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated battery against a household member (strangulation), four counts of battery of a household member, and telephone harassment. He will be booked into the Metro Detention Center after he is released from the hospital.
Over the next several months, the Multi-Agency Task Force will continue to investigate the shooting and will forward its findings to the District Attorney’s Office once the case is complete.
APD’s Internal Affairs Force Division and Force Review Board will also review the incident to determine whether department policies were followed and whether any policy or training changes are needed.
