“Come on man, be a man and just surrender,” said an APD officer over the PA system.

The standoff lasted for over six plus hours and APD kept repeating Dominguez’s name over the PA system and SWAT deployed different munitions into the building to try to get him to come out.

Dominguez was eventually not found inside the apartment and it is believed he escaped before the standoff even happened. La Mesa Elementary is feet away from the apartment and the school was scheduled to have a field day for kids. Due to Dominguez not being a man and surrendering to police the school had to postpone the field day. It is unclear if they were able to do the celebration the next day.

The manhunt continued and late on Wednesday night they again found Dominguez at a hotel at 1401 Woodward Rd. SE.

Officers were not gonna let the suspect escape this time and called in SWAT officers early to the hotel to assist detectives in the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect was identified as a 39-year-old man with an extensive criminal history. Crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect at 12:55 AM on Thursday morning. He then re-entered his hotel room and broke the window and once again tried to escape by jumping out the window to the outside.

SWAT officers challenged the suspect and deployed their police service dog, “Rebel”. The dog bit the suspect, causing him to fall to the ground. The dog maintained hold of the suspect, and as officers approached, they observed he had a firearm. Shots were fired, striking the suspect. The dog was also struck during the shooting.

Medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene.

The police service dog, Rebel, was injured and immediately taken to the vet but he did not survive his wounds. Rebel was pronounced dead.

Dominguez Arrested After Shots Fired Incident in 2022

At the time of Dominguez’s contact with police, he was on probation/parole for Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Case No. D-202-CR-2018-04285), to which he plead guilty. He also entered guilty pleas in additional cases for a separate offense of Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Motor Vehicle (D-202-CR-2018-03509), Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon (D-202-CR-2019-00080), Receipt, Transportation, or Possession of a Firearm or Destructive Device by a Felon (D-202-CR-2022-00264), and Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle without causing great bodily harm (D-202-CR-2022-00264).

In 2022, Dominguez was arrested by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office when deputies responded to an “armed subject/shots fired” call near Double Eagle Airport on Atrisco Vista Blvd NW, where the victim reported that an older male had fired a handgun at him while both were driving southbound. The suspect was identified as Dominguez, and deputies stopped his vehicle in a high-risk traffic stop. When talking with Dominguez, BCSO learned that he was currently on probation/parole for prior felony convictions (D-202-CR-2018-03509, D-202-CR-2018-04285, D-202-CR-2019-00080). Probation and Parole was notified of the recent incident, leading the New Mexico Corrections Department to issue an arrest order (RC-22-0126). Dominguez was taken into custody. Law enforcement databases also showed his New Mexico driver’s license is revoked. At the time of the 2022 incident, BCSO positively identified him through personal information and past booking photos.

Dominguez was reportedly released from the New Mexico Department of Corrections (NM DOC) and placed back on probation/parole on November 6, 2024.
