Albuquerque –
Detectives from the Albuquerque Police Department are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred during a confrontation.
Around 8:10PM on Friday, officers from the University Area Command responded to an incident at the intersection of Hannett Ave. and Girard Blvd. N.E. They found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel took the victim to a local hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Witnesses allegedly reported a confrontation between a vehicle driver and a pedestrian, which escalated when the driver, an adult male, shot the pedestrian. According to a statement released by APD, the driver administered first aid and remained at the scene to cooperate with detectives.
Homicide detectives are investigating the case. Detectives released the driver from custody while they work with the District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.
This incident might ultimately be classified as a justifiable homicide by the DA’s office and APD, but the Office of the Medical Investigator does not differentiate between justifiable and other types of homicide. They categorize all homicides as homicides. The OMI determines the cause of death using the following categories: natural, homicide, suicide, accident, undetermined, and pending.
A crook who tries to carjack someone should not be called a “victim”.
