Albuquerque –
On May 5th, 2025, officers in the Northeast Area Command spotted a male loitering outside a DK Gas Station located at 3601 Candelaria Road NE. Directly above where the man was standing was a no trespassing sign posted on the business.
An officer made contact with the man, identified as Bobby Chavez, 41, letting him know he was being detained for trespassing. Chavez was holding a small dog when the officer asked for his identification. As Chavez began looking through his wallet, he threw the dog at the officer and took off running.
The dog ran off in complete panic in the opposite direction and a foot chase occurred. Another officer spotted Chavez run into an apartment and the female resident texted a neighbor that he would not let her leave.
Shortly after, the woman got out through a back door and told officers Chavez would not let her leave and did not have permission to be in her residence. He entered her apartment through an unlocked screen door and told her he was running from police. He asked to use her phone and when she tried to leave, she said he held her back and closed the door.
APD’s K-9 Unit arrived on scene and Chavez then came out of the apartment and was taken into custody. The criminal complaint does not indicate the K9 did any apprehension of Chavez and was there for support in arresting Chavez.
In addition to his felony warrants, Chavez picked up new charges as follows:
– False Imprisonment
– Battery upon a Peace Officer
– Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer
The dog was not located after the foot chase and it is unclear if Chavez will face animal abuse charges.
UPDATE:
APD released this email statement:
We received many questions from people who were understandably concerned about the dog in our last video and we have an update.
A Good Samaritan brought the dog to Animal Welfare and staff was able to make contact with the dog’s owner who will soon be taking their pup home. The young female dog is in good health and doing well.
The dog did not belong to the suspect in the video and Animal Welfare is working with APD investigators on potential animal cruelty charges on the offender.
