UPDATE: APD Says Man was Handcuffed When Shot by Officers in Latest Police Shooting

Albuquerque

At around 11:00 AM, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department were at the Tewa Motor Lodge on Central Ave. helping City of Albuquerque Code Enforcement and members of ACS to remove trespassers and relocate residents from the location. APD was detaining a group of people when one became unruly and had to be handcuffed.

The adult male, who was handcuffed during the interaction, was involved in some sort of altercation that lead to APD officers to discharge their firearms. The shooting reportedly happened around 12:20 PM.

While we were on scene, a woman claiming to be his wife stormed through the police tape and started yelling at APD officers.

“You motherfuckers shot my husband!,” she yelled.

She was determined to see her husband’s dead body on the ground near the Tewa Motor Lodge, but three officers had to restrain her. His body was surrounded by evidence markers and crime scene tape as investigators were piecing together what happened. She was eventually escorted out of the scene and the officers deescalated the situation.

Around 11 o’clock, we went out after a 24 hour notice of inspection was given to the residence of the location, we should note that some people who live here are here and they pay their rent, and there are some people who live here who should not be here. As we were conducting our investigation with code enforcement, officers detained several individuals one of them was concealing his identity. Again he was detained, and when officers were working on confirming his identity, a disturbance occurred and shots were fired by at least one officer. A firearm was recovered on scene,”  said acting Police Chief Deputy Chief Cecily Barker

Barker confirmed the man was handcuffed during the police shooting but couldn’t say if the man reached for a weapon or explain how the situation led to the shooting. She did not say if the suspect had the firearm on his person during the incident. A firearm was reportedly found at the scene. Authorities did not disclose if the man was handcuffed with his hands positioned in front of him or behind him.

Director of the Planning Department Alan Varela was at the impromptu press conference with APD and said Code Enforcement has been going to properties that have been overrun by homeless.

“Proof that the owner was right to say that he needed intervention to help him with people who had overrun his property,” said Varela.

This is the 8th fatal officer involved shooting for 2024 for APD.

An earlier version of this listed seven fatal officer-involved shootings, but this has been updated. In one of these incidents, the OMI investigation found that the suspect was not struck by officer gunfire. However, APD did disclose two officers fired their weapons, so it is being counted as a fatal officer-involved shooting. The individual died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while evading police.

  1. Our Mayor and Police chief have taken a hands off approach to the drug epidemic in Albuquerque. Then when they try to get a handle on it you have what happened at Tewa Lodge. Every business owner and citizen in Albuquerque is suffering, especially along the Central corridor. Albuquerque and the rest of the country has a huge drug problem driven by Mexican Drug Cartels.

    1. Not to defend the cartels they’re monsters but it’s not driven by them it’s driven by every drug addict in this country if they don’t buy, the money dries up,just like people like to boycott Starbucks and bud light how about boycotting the drugs? time to look at the real issue.

  2. Yes it’s a snowball effect scenario shi* rolls down hill esp. Down central, a steep slope. Are borders aren’t secure neither are our streets. Cartel plays big part in it so do our cops by over looking the obv. Probs epidemic of drugs and crimes to go cherry pick wut they rather address traffic stops to rack up tickets and cars/property to auction. And DWi’s to take bribes to dismiss. Our politicians are not focused either. Balloon fiesta and I love N.M commercials are not what really going on here. It’s is a diversion. Crime/homeless and drugs are up why? Those in charge are not facing the main priorities here. Also as 1 previous citizen said a big portion ABQ community is to blame. I can’t go anywhere on any given day or time w/out some person coming up to me no matter the age, sex or race they are. They are Zombie Got any Blues? Got any Beans/ that’s new slang term for fentanyl . And it bugs me. How any human being can be that 1 track minded it’s all they care about. No hello, what’s your name? How are you? I’m so and so. Pleased to meet you. It’s They want fentanyl nothing else it’s Bizarre! So my moral to the story is as a people we have all kinds of addictions, wants and needs. But when a person is that desperate and determined for a illegal drug. Then it’s another level. I like beer, I like cigars. But I don’t go up to strangers hey you got any beer? You got any cigars? Because I’m not a Zombie who only focuses on my cravings or addictions . So yea I hate to say it but this is a new Frontier of dope fiend it’s Sad its very annoying and only getting worse before it ever gets better. I want to say if law enforcement plans on getting it under control don’t just do sting operations on Illegal fentanyl dealers. I say crack down on drugs soliciting also. Go get the drug buyers or solicitors off the street too! If they big me on daily basis when I don’t sell or buy drugs and try keeping my distance fr. Then but they still flag me down yell at me to get my attention..well they will do the same to a undercover cop posing as a dealer or just a regular pedestrian then you got them plenty o evidence video/audio etc soliciting to buy drugs. To me that’s the answer not just sting on drug dealers get these idiots who looking high and low for fentanyl off the street they are the 1’s fueling the dope sales . So I wish all you honestly the best of luck out here be careful and watch out for the lost dope heads who are only about 1 thing. blues! If someone ask you for beans , it isn’t pinto or pork and beans. So tell the low life’s NO! and get as far away as Possible. Peace, love and God bless us All.

  3. Wow!!! I have to give props to APD tonight because I just drove down Alvarado to Madiera and from central to copper there is not 1 drug addict sitting/ laying on the ground!! So surprising!! I live right around the corner from Alvarado and it’s been horrible!! But my main question will be how long will APD keep our streets cleaned up before giving in to the addicts? When the chief of police had his issue at Alvarado/ Central, the neighborhood was quiet for maybe 2 months. Then slowly, crime/ drugs won the streets back. So hopefully the higher ups( politicians) will finally get the hint. Great job to APD.. Thank you from a neighbor.

    1. Ya not one homicide during the balloon fiesta. It’s amazing what they can make the city appear to be, too bad they don’t take that much concern on a daily basis
