UPDATE: APD Shoots and Kills Man After Domestic Incident

Albuquerque –

Around 2:30PM, Albuquerque Fire Rescue was pulling up to the 12000 block of Menual Blvd. NE in regards to a medical incident. While AFR was arriving they heard gun shots being fired in the area. AFR called APD to let them know of the shots being fired in the area.

During the incident multiple 911 calls came into dispatch about gunshots happening in the area. One of the calls was the residents of the house stating a domestic situation was going on.

Foothills and SWAT officers swarmed the area to search for the scene and the suspect. At some point officers located the armed suspect behind a car. An officer fired a less than lethal round at the suspect and another tactical officer fired their duty rifle at the armed man. The man died on scene.

Medical personnel attempted life saving measures but the man died on scene. Investigators did find a firearm beside the dead man.

“As our officers arrived on scene and observed a male individual. He was behind a vehicle. There were giving him commands to drop the firearm both in English and Spanish,” said acting APD Police Chief Cecily Barker.

After the briefing, APD communications director sent an email informing the media of additional details:

Following our media briefing, detectives learned that the suspect fired at least one round from his handgun just prior to officers firing a less-lethal projectile and a lethal round that struck the suspect. The suspect is a man in his 30s. He died at the scene.

This is the 11th officer involved shooting and the 8th fatal shooting involving officers. The Multi-Agency Task Force will investigate the scene and will have a full report at a later date. APD will have a press briefing in the month or so releasing video footage and pertinent evidence photos from the case.
