As we reported to you yesterday, a fatal shooting occurred on February 17, 2025, at an apartment complex at 351 Washington St SE, leaving one man dead and another in police custody.
According to a criminal complaint filed by detectives from Albuquerque Police Department (APD), officers responded to a call about gunfire at approximately 11:56 AM. A neighbor reported hearing a gunshot and seeing a resident of the complex holding a handgun. A second 911 caller, identified as a woman with a casual relationship with the suspect, stated that her friend had accidentally shot another man while the two were “messing with the gun when the gun went off” in the parking lot of 351 Washington St SE.
Upon arrival, officers detained the suspect, Adam Roberts, 30, in the parking lot, where they also found a man, Gavin Huntsman, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency personnel determined Gavin was deceased. Nearby, police discovered a handgun and a magazine with unfired ammunition.
The woman, who had been with both men prior to the shooting, provided a statement to police after being read her Miranda rights. She stated that she had met Roberts on a dating app about a year ago and had received a text from him the night before, inviting her to hang out. When she arrived at his apartment, Roberts and Gavin were drinking. The group continued consuming alcohol into the early morning hours, after which Gavin fell asleep on the couch while Roberts and the woman went to bed.
According to the woman, Roberts later woke Gavin, stating he planned to take Gavin home so they could be alone. However, the conversation turned to firearms, and Gavin expressed interest in accompanying Roberts to shooting in the Mesa. The three individuals traveled west of Atrisco Boulevard, where they fired this recently purchased handgun. They began shooting around 10:30 AM, and all three individuals shot the gun for approximately fifteen minutes, per the criminal complaint. After shooting in the Mesa, Roberts proceeded to drive all three individuals to a gas station situated near Coors Blvd NW and Bluewater Rd NW to buy more alcohol.
After returning to the apartment complex, Roberts and Gavin exited the vehicle while the woman remained inside of the car. She reported hearing Roberts telling Gavin to “get your shit together” before instructing him to remove a pair of borrowed sandals. Moments later, she saw Roberts manipulate the firearm’s slide before raising it toward Gavin. She then heard Roberts say, “I might as well kill you if you don’t care about your life,” followed by a single gunshot.
After the shooting, Roberts reportedly stood over Gavin, expressing remorse and calling Gavin “his brother.” He then made suicidal statements before surrendering the firearm to the woman, who convinced him to hand it over. Roberts attempted to leave the scene, but the apartment complex gate was closed.
Officers detained Roberts upon arrival, noting signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol. He immediately requested a lawyer and made several statements while in custody, including, “I’m cooked, I’m cooked” and “You pushed me too far, I’m going to push back.” Officers also reported that Roberts laughed, made jokes, and asked to be kicked in the face.
The criminal complaint alleges that the female friend informed law enforcement that Roberts had previously pointed the same firearm at her.
Roberts is charged with an open count of murder and negligent use of a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Metro Detention Center.

Adam Roberts Previous Criminal History
April 2014
On April 6, 2014, Adam Roberts, then 19, was charged with Battery for allegedly punching his 14-year-old brother multiple times. According to the criminal complaint, Albuquerque Police responded to a call from the mother of the suspect, Adam, and juvenile victim, who reported ongoing physical aggression between her two sons. She stated that the older brother had punched his 14-year-old sibling multiple times in the shoulder, leaving visible bruises. The victim confirmed the assault, adding that his brother had made threats against him, causing him to fear for his safety. The mother stated to police that “this isn’t the first time Adam has been physically aggressive against (juvenile brother), and she fears that the violence will escalate until Adam seriously injures or even “kills (juvenile brother)”. The victim stated to police that Adam has made threats to “kill” him, and he does fear for his safety.
Adam was not present when officers arrived but returned to the home shortly afterward, at which point he was taken into custody and transported to the Prisoner Transport Center.
Despite the initial charges, a month later, the charges were “Dismissed by Prosecutor – Prosecution Unable to Proceed.” We are unable to see why exactly the charges were dismissed for this particular case. In April 2014, the Bernalillo County District Attorney was Kari Brandenburg.
March 2017
Adam Roberts was arrested for Battery Against a Household Member in March of 2017. Per the criminal complaint, officers from Albuquerque Police Department responded to a disturbance call on the night of March 7, 2017, after a caller reported hearing a woman screaming in distress at an apartment complex on Alvarado Dr SE.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Adam Roberts, who was knocking on a door before noticing law enforcement and attempting to walk away. After being stopped by officers, Roberts stated that he and his girlfriend had been in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. He claimed she struck him on the head, causing him to lose consciousness, though officers observed no visible injuries.
The woman involved provided a different account, describing a heated argument in which Roberts became aggressive, breaking items in the home before physically restraining her against a wall. She stated he later pressed his forearm against her throat, restricting her breathing before eventually releasing her. Fearing further harm, she struck him with a pot, at which point he ceased his actions but continued to trash the apartment.
Officers noted visible injuries on the woman, including scratches on her face and arm. For this incident, Roberts was booked into MDC for Battery Against a Household Member. However, on June 26, 2017, charges were “Dismissed by Prosecutor – Prosecution Unable to Proceed,” per court documents “the witness failed to appear and the state is unable to proceed without the Witness.” The Bernalillo County District Attorney in March 2017 was DA Raúl Torrez.
April 2021
In April of 2021, Adam Roberts was charged with Kidnapping and four counts of Aggravated Battery (household member). According to the criminal complaint for that case, the victim reported that she had returned home around 10:15 PM on April 5, 2021, after watching a movie with her mother. Upon entering the residence, she went to the garage to retrieve a fan and noticed her partner, Adam Roberts, was heavily intoxicated. When she confronted him about his excessive drinking, an argument ensued, and the two later moved to their bedroom.
The victim stated that as Roberts prepared for bed, he removed a handgun from his holster, unloaded it, and attempted to place it under his pillow. Expressing concerns about safety, she objected, which led to another confrontation. Roberts allegedly struck her multiple times with the firearm before she managed to secure it in her purse and place it in her closet.
The altercation escalated when Roberts began hitting the victim with a small hammer and a large flashlight, both of which left visible injuries on her body. In an attempt to escape, she locked herself inside a closet, which had been modified as a “safe room.” However, Roberts allegedly tore through the walls and forced his way inside, where he continued the attack by striking her with his fists and placing her in a chokehold.
The victim, who was visibly emotional while recounting the attack, stated that Roberts exerted enough pressure around her neck to prevent her from breathing, making her fear for her life. She described struggling to avoid landing on her stomach due to her pregnancy and eventually escaping his grasp. She then fled to the bathroom, where she was able to call 911 for help.
Responding deputies arrived at the scene, extracted the victim through a bathroom window, and took Roberts into custody. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where detectives documented her injuries, including red marks on her neck and chin, bruises on her arms, and redness near her eye, all consistent with her statements.
Detectives attempted to interview Roberts at Lovelace Hospital downtown, but he refused to cooperate and requested an attorney.
Roberts was subsequently booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) on four counts of Aggravated Battery against a Household Member—one count for each weapon used and one for the strangulation—as well as one count of Kidnapping. However, on June 3, 2021, the charges were “Dismissed by Prosecutor/Nolle Prosequi” because the victim informed the prosecutor’s office that she no longer wished to testify and did not want to cooperate in the case. In April 2021, the Bernalillo County District Attorney was Raúl Torrez.
Past DWI Charges, No Convictions
Adam Roberts also has past charges for Driving While Under the Influence. On August 03, 2018, he was charged with Aggravated DWI (Bodily Injury) (1st Offense), Reckless Driving and No Driver’s License, but it was Dismissed by Prosecutor / Nolle Prosequi on March 08, 2019. Per court records, it was dismissed for “non-compliance with NMRA 7-504.” At the time of this case, the Bernalillo County District Attorney was Raúl Torrez.
He was charged on October 23, 2022, with DWI Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs (.08 or Above)(1st Offense) and Open Container (Possession)(1st Offense). The Open Container (Possession)(1st Offense) was “Dismissed by Prosecutor Per Plea Agreement.”
The charge of DWI Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs (.08 or Above)(1st Offense) Roberts had pled guilty, but sentencing was “Deferred.” While looking at NM Courts, we are unsure why this particular case did not get flagged as it appears Roberts never completed the terms of the plea. On May 2023, there is a note on NM Courts which says “Failure to Attend DWI School: Failed to complete class by the due date assigned during school registration.” On June 4, 2023, a bench warrant was issued, for failure “Failure to Attend Victim Impact Program.” The warrant was cancelled on June 9, 2023, and the note says “VIp Class Reschedule.” The class was rescheduled on July 6, 2023. On July 14, 2023, there is another mention of rescheduling the DWI school. Almost nine months later, on April 17, 2024, court records state “First Offender Program Unsuccessful Completion.”
We initiated communication with the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office regarding the 2022 DWI case. We inquired about the possibility of a probation violation hearing at this point, as Roberts failed to complete the first offender program. We were informed by DA Sam Bregman’s office that “the scheduling of parole violations is done by the Court’s probation team and not our office. We (the DA’s office) do not receive notice of non-compliance unless probation notifies us by setting a parole violations – which was not done here.“
Additionally, we asked about the plea agreement and whether Robert’s failure to complete the First Offender Program would result in any further actions. We were told that his failure to complete the program would not necessitate any additional measures. The DA’s office said, “defendant was given extensions of time to complete his probationary requirements and there was never a formal probation violation hearing. His probation was ultimately closed out unsuccessfully. This DWI will not and cannot be reopened because the probationary term has expired.“
Editor’s Note:
We attempted to obtain booking photographs from Roberts’ previous arrests, which resulted in a delay in the publication of this article. However, as of the writing, we have not received a response from MDC.

GOOD GRIEF!!!!!! I hope this is not typical of how severely troubled people are handled in our judicial system! To avoid getting political, I’ll forgo making any statements about the recent handling of certain well-known offenders.
