On June 6, 2026, at approximately 11:54 PM, the New Mexico State Police were requested by the Albuquerque Police Department to assist with a crash involving a motorcycle on Interstate 25 northbound near Comanche.

Upon arrival, officers observed bystanders providing aid to the motorcyclist, identified as 24-year-old Keegan Thomas. A 2013 BMW, driven by Sanchez, was also located at the scene and sustained significant front-end damage consistent with a rear-end collision involving the motorcycle.

Preliminary findings indicate both vehicles were traveling northbound on Interstate 25 when the motorcycle was struck from behind. The NMSP PIO Officer Wilson Silver says “Mr. Thomas was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, multiple callers reported a motorcycle down in the roadway on I-25 northbound near Comanche, with one caller stating that “the motorcyclist and motorcycle had been run over by a vehicle.” Responding officers arrived to find Thomas in the roadway with severe injuries and a damaged motorcycle nearby.

The criminal complaint states that Sanchez told investigators he believed he had struck “debris” in the roadway prior to realizing his vehicle had sustained damage consistent with a collision. Sanchez told officers “he pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road and requested a tow truck and his son to come pick him up.” NMSP officers detailed in the complaint Sanchez’s BMW had “heavy front end damage and was disabled. The damage was consistent with striking the motorcycle.

Officers noted signs of impairment, including slurred speech, balance issues, and the odor of alcohol. Field sobriety testing reportedly indicated impairment, and Sanchez was arrested for driving while under the influence.

Sanchez was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated driving while intoxicated, and careless driving.

The crash investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from their Vehicular Crimes Unit.

A criminal complaint is only an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law, with the burden of proof resting on the prosecution.
