Albuquerque –
In court Friday, prosecutors revealed that the victim in a downtown Albuquerque shooting, now identified as David Segura, 26, died from his injuries on Thursday, days after he was gunned down near 8th Street and Central Avenue. The case is now a homicide investigation.
Around 2:26 AM on May 4, 2025, officers with the Albuquerque Police Department’s Valley Area Command were flagged down near 8th St and Central Ave by someone reporting that shots had been fired and a person was wounded.
Responding officers found a male victim, later identified David Segura, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Segura was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition. Due to the severity of his injuries, detectives were unable to obtain a statement from him and he died four days later.
According to the criminal complaint, a male witness told officers that the victim had possibly been in a verbal altercation earlier in the night near a food truck on 6th Street and Central Ave. The witness said they were walking home when they noticed a white sedan following them near the 8th Street roundabout. He distanced himself from the victim out of fear of being targeted, then heard multiple gunshots and saw the victim collapse moments later. He ran to seek help. The criminal complaint states that ShotSpotter detected 17 rounds in the area.
Detectives at the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) reviewed surveillance footage and confirmed that a white sedan passed the victim just before gunfire erupted from the passenger side. Muzzle flashes were visible, and the victim fell to the ground. Moments earlier, security cameras had captured the same vehicle involved in the altercation with three male individuals. After the fight, the trio got into the car and drove west on Central before turning around near 8th Street and circling back—ultimately passing and opening fire on the victim.
Using license plate reader (LPR) technology, investigators were able to track the suspect vehicle to a residence in northeast Albuquerque. The vehicle was registered to a woman whose 18-year-old son, Isaiah Martinez, was also listed as living at the same address. According to the criminal complaint, surveillance confirmed that the vehicle was parked in the driveway and matched the one seen during the shooting.
While detectives conducted surveillance on the home, Martinez exited the house and entered the sedan with a female passenger. Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop near San Mateo Boulevard and Palo Duro Avenue, taking Martinez into custody without incident.
During an interview with detectives, Martinez acknowledged his Miranda rights and agreed to talk. He initially denied involvement, claiming that a friend had borrowed the vehicle. However, he later admitted to being the driver at the time of the shooting. He said he was with a friend when they got into an argument with another man downtown.
Martinez told authorities that they were almost at Martinez’s vehicle when an individual gave them dirty looks. Per the criminal complaint, Martinez claimed that during the confrontation, his friend, whom he described as a “white boy with curly hair” named Matthew, was allegedly slapped. Martinez and Matthew got into the vehicle and began following the man involved in the altercation.
According to Martinez, when they caught up to the man walking near 8th and Central, Matthew rolled down the window and said, “Let’s get him,” before opening fire. Martinez admitted he then drove away from the scene and later dropped his friend off at his home.
Investigators were able to identify “Matthew” as Matthew Akugue, 18, a senior at Del Norte High School. Martinez confirmed the identification after detectives showed him a school photo of Akugue. The criminal complaint says Martinez has known Akugue since the start of the school year.
As of this publication, Martinez faces charges including Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle (resulting in great bodily harm), Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, and Unlawful Use of a Firearm.
Akugue faces charges including Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle (resulting in great bodily harm), Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, and Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon (discharge).
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that they are working to identify and locate additional individuals possibly involved in the shooting. At the time of publication, there have been no charges filed for murder or manslaughter.
As always, all individuals named or pictured are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
