Albuquerque –

On January 11, 2025, around midnight, the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue were dispatched to a single vehicle crash near the intersection of San Mateo Boulevard NE and Cherokee Road NE. Subsequently, around 2:00 AM, APD’s Fatal Crash Team was sent to investigate this serious injury crash due to the injuries sustained by occupants of the vehicle.

A preliminary investigation determined that a grey 2003 Ford pickup was traveling northbound on San Mateo in the center lane. The driver of the vehicle, who was purportedly under the influence of alcohol, was going at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the east side curb. The vehicle rolled and landed right side up. In the melee of the crash, the vehicle also collided with a light pole, per the criminal complaint.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue stated the “first arriving AFR unit arrived on scene and reported one vehicle involved with a total of six patients, four of them with critical injuries. A total of twelve units were dispatched to the scene to establish treatment, triage and transport operations. Due to the severity of the collision multiple patients had been ejected from the vehicle, however no extrication was necessary. Three AFR Rescue’s and three Albuquerque Ambulance units each transported all patients from the scene to local hospitals.” AFR reported that four patients sustained critical injuries, while two of the remaining patients had serious injuries.

In a release from APD’s civilian PIO, they said “there were a total of seven occupants in the vehicle, ranging in age from 15 to 20. Six people were transported to the hospital.” The media release went on to say “One of the occupants was ejected from the vehicle and only sustained moderate injuries.” It is reported that the driver and two other passengers sustained severe injuries, with one passenger’s survival uncertain.

A DWI Officer conducted an interview with the driver, who admitted to consuming alcohol before the crash and allegedly also while driving. The driver stated that he remembered there being a bottle of E&J and Jack Daniels and had consumed four shots from the bottle. According to the criminal complaint, he went on to say “the shots he drank were not large drinks since he was driving.” The driver stated there was an argument between all the passengers, prior to the crash but he could not recall the reason for losing control of the vehicle.

As per the criminal complaint, APD officers also interviewed a passenger who stated there was a “major argument” between all of the occupants of the vehicle and that “the driver jerked the vehicle to the right right and crashed it.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the primary contributing factor in this case is driving while intoxicated and a high rate of speed.

The driver has been identified as Eddie Madrid, 18, and DWI related charges are pending. Madrid was taken to a local area hospital after the crash, and has not been booked into MDC as of this writing.

  1. Another media source reported the alleged intoxicated 18 yr old driver suffered a broken spine and is paralyzed and one of the passengers was also paralyzed and is not expected to survive. Unbelievably sad! Prayers go out to the victims and families this idiot 18 yr old driver created..

    1. It amazes me how gossip can be published as “news”.. and people so quick to judge on hearsay… as quickly as you judge may you too be judged so harshly on your judgement day

  2. 18 years old, paralyzed and responsible for this much pain and suffering. And for what? One night of partying. No matter the legal consequences this kid will carry this burden the rest of his life. Sad for everyone involved.
