Albuquerque –

In the early morning hours of September 6, 2024, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department was investigating a stolen car case. While on the scene, BCSO deputies heard a loud pop consistent with a gunshot. Deputies observed a vehicle parked awkwardly in the road and heard a female screaming frantically.

Deputies began to run towards the area where they heard the woman screaming and saw a man push a woman into a car. Afterward, they identified themselves as law enforcement, and the man got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and drove away. Authorities have identified the driver as Joshua Medina, a 31-year-old resident of Albuquerque with a history of felony convictions.

Deputies deployed spikes and performed a PIT maneuver, terminating the pursuit at the intersection of Goff Blvd SW and Five Points Rd SW. Subsequently, BCSO took Medina, who was also the driver, into custody. The woman was found to have a through-and-through gunshot wound to the arm. First responders transported her to the hospital.

The criminal complaint alleges that Medina said the victim was his girlfriend. Deputies discovered evidence of blood near the scene of the shooting. BCSO’s violent crime detectives have interviewed the girlfriend. However, she refused to give a statement naming Medina as the shooter.

Medina is charged with:

  • Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Resisting, evading or obstructing an officer (Resisting)
  • Improper Display of Registration Plate
  • Receiving/Transferring Stolen Motor Vehicles (1st offense)
  • Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle (1st Offense)
