Albuquerque –
Just before 11:30 AM on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) and Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) responded to a call about a large outside fire in the area of Coors and Tower. We informed you about this incident just after it was reported, you can read our initial publication below. The address was later updated to 3280 Bridge Blvd SW. Multiple 911 callers reported a heavy column of black smoke visible across the city.
This area falls within an automatic aid firebox, prompting a joint response from both AFR and BCFD. Albuquerque Police Department (APD) arrived first and confirmed a large pile of burning tires in the center of a junkyard, with multiple vehicles and equipment threatened.
AFR’s Engine 7 was first on scene, established a water supply, and deployed an initial attack line. Engine 17 arrived on the opposite side of the yard, securing its own water source and stretching an additional line. BCFR Battalion Chief 38 assumed command as crews deployed multiple hand lines and master streams to contain the fire. The junkyard owner also used heavy equipment to bury the burning tires under dirt.
Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures, though several pieces of equipment on the storage-yard were destroyed. No injuries were reported. Fire investigators responded, but the cause remains undetermined.
AFR remained on scene for overhaul operations. If more information becomes available, they will provide an update. The included footage is from Thomas Youngman and also AFR.
