Albuquerque, NM –
As we reported to you on Thursday, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department responded to a disturbance call at an apartment complex at 1100 Madeira SE around 12:30PM. Upon arrival, a building manager informed them that Calvert Cayatineto was causing damage inside apartment 203.
The manager stated she attempted to make contact with Cayatineto, but she was refused entry to the home and threatened them with violence. Witnessing the commotion from outside, APD officers observed Cayatineto throwing objects, including large pieces of broken glass, from the second-floor balcony.
Standoff and Fire Erupt
After attempts to initiate dialogue failed for ten minutes, Cayatineto ignited a fire on the balcony partition wall. Albuquerque Fire Rescue suspects the rapid spread of the flames was due to the use of an accelerant by the offender. According to the criminal complaint, APD officers immediately began evacuating the building while also securing breaching tools.
Forced Entry and Arrest
Fearing the fire’s escalation and for Cayatineto safety, officers forced entry into the burning apartment. They located Cayatineto, unconscious on the balcony and removed him from the flames. Paramedics treated Cayatineto, the apartment’s only tenant, for undisclosed injuries.
AFR contained the apartment fire in less than 30 minutes. It is uncertain whether the fire damaged any neighboring apartments or displaced any other occupants due to fire or smoke damage.
Charges and Damages
Authorities arrested Calvert on charges of criminal damage to property and arson. They booked him into the Metropolitan Detention Center yesterday, June 27th, at 8:27 PM. Initial estimates suggest damages exceeding $5,000 to the apartment, excluding fire restoration. The Albuquerque Fire Rescue Arson Investigator, advised that the damage caused from the just the fire was in between $500 and $2500.
As of this posting, Cayatineto is still being held at MDC.
