Albuquerque –

The Albuquerque Metro area will more than likely reach 100 homicides by the end of 2025. We have tracked homicide statistics extremely accurately for over five years. We have always counted each and every homicide that occurs in the Albuquerque Metro area no matter the agency investigating.

The majority of law enforcement agencies in Albuquerque do not count fatal officer-involved shootings or justifiable homicide in their totals. However, we at ABQRAW count every death that the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) classifies as a homicide. We use their numbers and they know about each and every reported death in the state.

After doing an IPRA request for the OMI homicide totals for all of Bernalillo County, we learned about 10 new homicides that the OMI ruled a homicide which police did NOT inform the public or media about. Two homicides on the OMI list, the investigating agency was listed as “unknown,” so we have reached out to the OMI for additional information. We are not counting the two “unknown” homicides in our total yet. Of the other eight homicides we learned about, five were APD homicides, two were BCSO homicides, and one was reported at UNMH.

As of this time last year, Albuquerque/Bernalillo County had recorded 70 homicides. In 2025, we are currently at 83. Again, our total does not include the two homicides being investigated by the “unknown” agency until we learn more. With these two deaths, it is possible that the person may have been transported from another city to UNMH, where they later died. So in this instance, they would not be counted. Here is the breakdown by investigating agency:

  • The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has investigated 63 homicides, 10 of which have been ruled justifiable.
  • The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has investigated 7 homicides.
  • The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) has investigated a homicide of a juvenile that occurred on the University of New Mexico campus.

Additionally:

  • BCSO has had two fatal deputy-involved shootings (DIS).
  • APD has had nine fatal officer-involved shootings (OIS).
  • Kirtland Air Force Base has had one fatal airman-involved shooting in February near Kirtland Air Force Base. Federal and local law enforcement investigated the scene.

At the current pace of homicide investigations, the Albuquerque Metro area is on track to reach 100 homicides again this year for the fifth straight year.
