Albuquerque/Bernalillo County –
Albuquerque is once again facing a surge in violent crime, with the city’s homicide rate reaching unprecedented levels. This week, we received records from the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), which classified several previously unclassified deaths as homicides for 2024.
With over 100 killings reported this year, that puts Albuquerque in a depressing trend of reaching over 100 plus homicide investigations per year for four straight years. ABQ RAW counts all homicides and does not exclude officer involved shootings or self defense homicides since OMI does not see a difference. Our breakdown is below:
2021: 128 Total Homicides
2022: 170 Total Homicides
2023: 150 Total Homicides
2024: 102 * Still ongoing count
Homicides in 2024 are down compared to last year and previous years, but there have now been 548 homicide investigations by various law enforcement agencies within Bernalillo County. The Federal Bureau of Investigation released crime statistics for 2024, which show that the violent crime rate in Bernalillo County has remained above the national average.
The OMI’s homicide list has identified several cases that were previously unknown to ABQRAW. We have reached out to the OMI to seek additional information regarding these particular cases. Our current assessment is that at least three of these incidents took place within the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area and will be included in the 2024 homicide count.
At the end of the year, we will analyze the homicide total by agency. We will also attempt to provide statistics on the gender distribution of victims (male vs. female), the average age of homicide victims, the most common cause of death (shooting, stabbing, or beating), the average age of offenders, and the gender distribution of offenders.
Until the streets are “cleaned,” then the murders will continue. Politicians continue to fail the people of ABQ.
Life long resident of Albuquerque. This city was such a great place to be in the 80s and 90s. Street drugs and the gang bangers who deal them have turned Albuquerque into a war zone city wide. The entire Central corridor has gone to shit. APD must get sick of arresting the same dirt bags over and over and over again. Our Governor and Legislature have a heavy hand in the rotating doors of our Judicial System. Seems criminal rights outweigh law abiding citizens in New Mexico, especially Albuquerque. Until we hold criminals accountable nothing will change. But hey, the balloons are cool, seems that’s all that matters nowadays.
Tim Keller and Michelle Lujan Grisham have turned Albuquerque and New Mexico into the murder capitals of the southwest. As far as I am concerned they are complicit in the murders with their lack of response over time. Since Tim Keller has been mayor nearly nearly 800 people have been murdered in this city. What has he done about it? Nothing!
[…] given her stated reasons for issuing her edict in the first place. Violent crime in Albuquerque is still above the national average, and the city’s slight decline in murders pales in comparison to the statistics in other […]
