APD Investigates Two Fatal Pedestrian vs Vehicle Crashes, Releases Preliminary Information

Albuquerque –

Albuquerque police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred early Tuesday morning. The incident took place near the intersection of Montgomery Boulevard and San Mateo Boulevard.

According to authorities, a male pedestrian was lying in the right lane of Montgomery Boulevard when he was struck by a white Lincoln sedan. The crash happened just west of the intersection with San Mateo Boulevard. The sedan’s driver stopped at the Lovelace parking lot after the impact.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver told police he believed he had hit debris or a cardboard box. Witnesses confirmed seeing the pedestrian lying in the road before the crash.

Investigators believe alcohol and excessive speed were not factors in the accident. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to gather more information. The investigation is ongoing.

This is the second fatal crash investigation APD has investigated since yesterday morning. The Albuquerque Police Department’s fatal traffic team investigated an earlier crash that happened at around 12:50 AM on Tuesday, October 15, between a vehicle and a pedestrian near Central Ave. and San Mateo Blvd.

Preliminary reports say a man in a wheelchair was crossing Central in the middle of the road, going from north to south. At the same time, a green Lexus sedan was driving east on Central, just past San Mateo, in the second lane. The pedestrian was seriously injured and died at the scene.

According to information released from APD, the driver said he was heading south on San Mateo and turned left onto Central. As he continued driving east, he didn’t see the man in the wheelchair until he was about 10 feet away. He tried to swerve but couldn’t avoid hitting him. The pedestrian didn’t have any ID and remains unidentified.

Police say alcohol and speeding do not seem to be factors. The main cause appears to be pedestrian error, but the investigation is ongoing.
