Fourth DWI Officer Resigns in Lieu of Pending IA Interview

ALBUQUERQUE –

APD has announced that a fourth APD officer has resigned from the department during the on-going administrative investigation into allegations of wrong-doing by DWI officers.

Nelson Ortiz has now submitted his resignation on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Investigators were attempting to schedule an interview with Ortiz, but he elected to resign.

Ortiz joined APD in January 2016 and served on the DWI Unit from 2018-2021. He was currently serving in the Motors Unit since 2021.

APD launched the administrative investigation in January of this year into allegations of wrong-doing by officers who currently work for, or who have worked for, the DWI Unit in the past. Five officers were notified that they were targets of the investigation.

In addition to Ortiz, three other officers have resigned during the investigation:

Justin Hunt, who started at APD in 2000, resigned on Feb. 7, 2024.

Honorio Alba, who started at APD in 2014, resigned on Feb. 29, 2024.

Harvey Johnson, who started at APD in 2014, resigned on March 13, 2024.

APD’s investigation is on-going. From our investigation we believe that APD officer Josh Montano is the only officer that has NOT resigned or been fired by the department to date.

The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office is still investigating and has not released any details of the early January 2024 raids. The warrants allegedly focused on five APD officers, attorney Tom Clear, and paralegal Rick Mendez homes.

It is important to note that anyone involved in this case has NOT been charged.
