Heroic Rescue: Highlighting AFR Crews that Save Trapped Resident from January House Fire

Radio traffic and on-scene footage capture Rescue 5’s successful rescue on January 2, 2025. The 103rd Cadet Class Graduation will honor the fire crews on February 27 at 1pm at the Sid Cutter Pavilion.

On January 2, 2025, a residential structure fire occurred at 8908 Robin Ave NE. We reported to you about this fire as it was happening. You can read more, this link from our initial publication is below. The AFR Dispatcher notified all responding units about an occupant still trapped in the residence. Engine 9 was the first unit on scene and confirmed a working structure fire with an urgent rescue profile and established command. To extinguish the fire, Engine 9 deployed a hose line into the residence.

Rescue 5 arrived shortly after and located the trapped individual at the front of the home while Engine 9 was stretching a line. The occupant tried to escape through the hallway, but retreated to the bedroom due to intense heat and heavy smoke. Rescue 5 pulled the person through the front window; however, the occupant had sustained smoke inhalation and extremity injuries. Rescue 5 immediately provided patient care and transported the patient to UNM Hospital.

Teamwork made this life-saving rescue possible, from the initial dispatch and decisive command to the coordinated fire attack and successful victim recovery. The on-scene footage and radio traffic were recorded by Albuquerque Fire Rescue and posted to their social media platforms.

    This is why everyone loves a firefighter. They are only there to try and help make things better. When I was a firefighter back in the day. I was the one who put on the bunker gear and scba for the school kids. So they would know what and who to look for incase they were trapped by fire and needed to be rescued. I absolutely loved talking to the kids. Showing them around the apparatus and the firehouse.
