Late this afternoon, a jury convicted Nathen Garley and Jose Romero on all counts including First-Degree Murder, Tampering with Evidence, Shooting at or From a Motor Vehicle, and multiple other crimes.
In September 2023, following an Isotopes Baseball game, the perpetrators of this incident shot up a truck, resulting in the death of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas and leaving his cousin, Tatiana Villegas, paralyzed as they exited the stadium.
Froylan’s mother and infant brother were also present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Investigators believe that the Villegas’ truck was mistaken for a vehicle belonging to a rival gang of Garley and Romero.
Both men face life in the NM Department of Corrections. Deputy District Attorneys Larry Hansen and Collin Brennan prosecuted this case.
“This was a tragedy that never should have happened. An 11-year-old child is dead and a woman is now paralyzed. I’m proud of the hard work and dedication our prosecutors put into this case. This verdict won’t bring Froylan back, but we hope it brings his family some sort of peace and justice after everything they have been through,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.
