APD’s Fatal Crash Investigation Team determined the vehicle driven by Nunez-Guzman was heading eastbound on Claremont Ave. and attempted a left turn to proceed northbound on Carlisle Blvd. N.E.  While in the process of the turn, the bicyclist was heading westbound on Claremont Ave through the intersection with Carlisle Blvd.  While both the vehicle and the bicyclist were in the intersection, the vehicle struck the bicycle. The vehicle then fled the scene without checking on the cyclist he plowed into.

According to the criminal complaint, Nunez-Guzman called 911 after he got home from working at Walmart and let police know he hit the cyclist. He said he was feeling light headed and wanted to be checked out by an ambulance.

The complaint says APD was able to find a car matching the description of the offender vehicle at 5020 Ellison St. NE, where the Siegel Suites is located. Officers were able to observe damage to the vehicle consistent with the crash that happened hours earlier.

Nunez-Guzman admitted to removing a “Baby on Board” magnet and the license plate from the car. He stated he hid both items inside his room.

The bicycle victim involved in the crash has not been identified, but he did die at UNMH later this afternoon.

The suspect Nunez-Guzman is charged with Leaving the scene of an accident and Tampering with Evidence.
