Murder Suspect Who Stabbed Man During Fight Arrested by APD

Albuquerque –

On April 28th, 2025, the Albuquerque Police Department arrested Joseph Hernandez, 46-year-old of Albuquerque for a murder. The murder happened on April 26th, 2025 near the Healthcare for the Homeless building at 1st and Rosemont NW.

At approximately 5:40 PM on the 26th, a stabbing was reported near 1st St NW and Rosemont Ave NW. The victim was reportedly stabbed in the neck. Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department’s Valley Area Command, along with crews from Albuquerque Fire Rescue, responded to the scene.

When APD officers and AFR’s Engine 1 arrived, they found one person with stab wounds in full cardiac arrest. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the criminal complaint, Hernandez and the victim were seen in surveillance video on the street engaging in a conversation when a physical fight broke out. Hernandez was pushed to the ground and he retrieves a knife. He then stabs the victim with the knife during the fight and his shirt was ripped off.

Hernandez then fled the scene with his shirt off while pushing his illegally acquired shopping cart with all of his life possessions.

The complaint goes on to say, APD officers interviewed witnesses and were able to identify Hernandez as a suspect. APD officers had previously made contact with Hernandez early in the morning of April 26th on an unrelated situation to the stabbing.

Hernandez was booked on first degree murder and two counts of tampering with evidence.
