Albuquerque –

In the early morning hours of New Year’s, the Albuquerque Police Department was called to the Northpointe Village Apartments for a disturbance and car crash.

According to a criminal complaint, 38-year-old Danzel Rice was driving drunk and crashed into numerous parked cars at the property. He got out of the car and started to flee on foot. Residents of the apartment complex decided to hold Rice down for police and fought with him. During this fight a gun shot rang out, 37-year-old Adrian Alcantar allegedly fired his handgun into the air.

Alcantar told police that Rice crashed into his Mini Cooper and Rice attempted to get away. He stated that “I pulled my weapon” and fired a “warning shot” into the air.

Alcantar was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

An APD officer interviewed Rice and he made remarks about “pulling around” and parking his vehicle. The officer smelled alcohol on Rice’s person. Rice performed poorly on sobriety tests and blew twice above the limit at around .16 BAC. The legal limit is .08 BAC.

Rice was charged aggravated DWI, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident with no injuries.

This 2025 call had everything that a local law agency PSA’s warn the public NOT to do. Often police agencies warn not to shoot firearms into the air, not to drive drunk, and not fighting your neighbors during New Year’s celebrations.
