07/30/2024 amended: NOT a crash was a precautionary emergency landing
Albuquerque –
Around 9:35AM, Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched near the Double Eagle Airport, in response to a reported plane crash. AFR’s Engine 22, Engine 17 and Battalion Commander 4 responded to the scene.
The plane reportedly had a soft landing or crashed near Shooting Range Access Rd and Jim McDowell Rd. After some time searching for the downed plane, AFR eventually located the crash site. The two occupants of the plane were standing outside of the plane apparently unharmed.
AFR says, the pilot described the aircraft as not getting lift on takeoff because of loss of engine power. They also described the plane having minimal damage and had a soft landing.
While we were on scene we observed a single-engine plane, Piper PA-28 Cherokee, with the landing gear down in the mesa. The pilot landed near the fence line of a property just before Shooting Range Access RD. Double Eagle employees and the plane occupants were on scene awaiting FAA investigators who will now take over the investigation. It is unknown what caused the plane to go down but investigators will get to the bottom of it within the next two years.
The marketing coordinator of the Albuquerque aviation department Diana Lopez reached out to us to say that the event was merely a precautionary emergency landing and NOT a crash.
You crack me up. Hahahaha!
I knew of a “Pile-it” in Wyoming who had a habit of not making the airports to land. Kept running out of fuel, so made a highway landing, and an almost on the runway landing. Once while taxiing, he collapsed the landing gear… both props and engines were damaged. One time he rolled off the runaway, and struck a boulder.. Don’t know where he is, or was, anymore. Keep checking the air when I’m near airports, now!
