Around 9:15 PM, a crash involving a semi-truck occurred on Interstate 40 eastbound between Louisiana and Wyoming. Following the collision, at least one vehicle caught fire.
Units from Albuquerque Police and Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Authorities say at least three people were transported to a local hospital, including two with life-threatening injuries.
According to a witness, a semi-truck hit a pickup truck carrying at least two occupants. The witness said the occupants of the pickup appeared to have suffered critical injuries.
The crash and fire are impacting all lanes of Interstate 40 eastbound. I-40 eastbound is closed from San Mateo to Wyoming.
An investigation into the cause of the crash will be conducted by either the Albuquerque Police Department or the New Mexico State Police.
UPDATE:
In an update sent by AFR they stated:
“On March 11, 2026 at 9:12 pm, AFR was dispatched to I-40 eastbound, just east of Louisiana for a motor vehicle collision involving a commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle resulting in a fire. Crews arrived to a semi-truck well involved in fire and three patients that were out of the vehicles on arrival. Two patients required immediate transport and one was evaluated on scene and did not result in transport. One patient was transported by Rescue 13 and one patient by Albuquerque Ambulance.
Engine 5, Engine 12 and Engine 13 stretched multiple lines for fire control, Ladder 5 coordinated suppression efforts. AFR’s EMS supervisor, Unit 78 coordinated treatment and transport. Due to the fuel load of the semi-truck and cargo, a water shuttle was initiated and a water tender from Bernalillo County Fire Rescue responded to assist with water supply. A total of 9 AFR units responded and 1 water tender from BCFR.
NM State Police will be conducting the investigation. I-40 will remain closed eastbound at Louisiana until NM State Police have completed their investigation. No other information is available at this time.”
