According to radio transmissions, AFR’s Engine 5 arrived on scene first and confirmed a working fire with heavy smoke and flames showing from both the exterior and interior. Additional AFR units responded and assisted with fire attack and search operations. Crews conducted a primary search of the structure and confirmed no occupants inside.

The fire was knocked down within five minutes of Engine 5’s arrival. No civilian or AFR personnel injuries were reported.

Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause and origin. At the time of this publication, no additional information is available.

This abandoned Pizza Hut has had a history of previous fires, including on January 29, 2025 at 3:30 AM and 9:00 AM, February 26, 2025 at 3:47 AM, and today. As a result, both gas and electrical utilities had been disconnected. During today’s fire attack operations, AFR crews continuously monitored the roof’s structural integrity due to previous fire damage and the increased risk of structural collapse.

Following the first fire on January 29th, Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) reported that the blaze had started inside the building and it was determined to be accidental. AFR responded to a second incident on January 29 at 9:00 AM, after Pizza Hut employees reported the smell of smoke. The second response involved a minor fire.

On February 26, AFR responded to the Pizza Hut again and when Engine 5 arrived, flames were showing from the roof. In an update post to Facebook, AFR stated that “the fire caused significant damage, with smoke damage throughout the structure and fire damage extending from the interior through the roof.

It remains unclear whether the City of Albuquerque is considering classifying the property as a nuisance or hazard.
