Albuquerque –
The Albuquerque Police Department has identified the man shot by police overnight as Stephen Griego, 41. Griego was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his wounds.
According to witnesses, Griego was involved in a confrontation with another man near the intersection of Central Ave. and 3rd St. NW. There were several officers in the busy area of Downtown when they heard a gunshot at 11:53 PM. Officers ran toward the gunfire and four of the officers fired several times at Griego. Officers placed him into custody and started first-aid until a rescue unit arrived.
The man in the altercation with Griego was shot one time. Investigators are working to confirm who shot the man, including whether Griego shot him during the altercation. That man was transported to a local hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
A third man was shot, possibly struck by a stray bullet about a block away from the shooting. Investigators are also working to determine who fired the shot that struck the bystander. That victim was transported to a local hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Over the next several months, the Multi-Agency Task Force will continue investigating the shooting before forwarding its findings to the District Attorney’s Office for a decision on whether criminal charges are warranted. APD’s Internal Affairs Force Division will conduct a separate administrative review to determine whether officers followed department policy, while the department’s Force Review Board will evaluate the incident for potential policy changes and training improvements.
When more information is released on this officer-involved shooting, we will update you.
