Albuquerque –
The Albuquerque Police Department’s Fatal Crash Team is investigating two fatal crashes that occurred overnight.
Alameda Road N.E. and Edith Blvd. N.E.
On August 7, 2024, shortly after midnight, APD’s Fatal Crash Team arrived at the intersection of Alameda Road N.E. and Edith Blvd. N.E. to investigate a fatal crash involving two vehicles. The crash involved a Silver Honda Accord and a marked Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) field unit, a Ford Explorer.
Preliminary findings indicate that both vehicles were heading northbound on Edith N.E. A multi-jurisdiction call-out was initiated with the APD fatal crash team taking the lead. The BCSO fatal team shadowed them.
The BCSO unit rear-ended the Honda Accord, causing it to crash into a wall. According to BCSO deputies, the involved deputy radioed about the Honda being a suspicious vehicle and losing sight of it. The deputy also reported that the Honda brake-checked him.
Emergency responders pronounced the Honda’s driver dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was not wearing a seatbelt. The deputy involved in the incident was unharmed and did not require hospital treatment. The Honda’s front and side curtain airbags, as well as the BCSO unit’s front airbag, deployed.
The BCSO deputy exercised his right to remain silent and will be interviewed at a later date. There is no suspicion of alcohol or drug use. Authorities canvassed the area but found no witnesses or additional evidence.
Constitution Avenue N.E. and Wyoming Blvd. N.E.
At 3:30 a.m. on August 7, 2024, the Fatal Crash Team responded to the intersection of Constitution Avenue N.E. and Wyoming Blvd. N.E. to investigate a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The crash involved a black Toyota Tundra pick-up truck. Preliminary investigations indicate the Toyota was traveling westbound on Constitution Ave. N.E., just west of Wyoming Blvd. N.E.
According to APD, Kaseman Hospital had reportedly released the pedestrian after he battered hospital security guards and then fled from Kaseman on foot. After Kaseman released the individual, the security guards neither followed them nor witnessed the crash, but they did hear the crash. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Investigators gathered witness information, but no further evidence is available at this time.
