ALBUQUERQUE –
Kalani S. Uehara, 26, from Albuquerque, has pleaded guilty in federal court to cyberstalking, computer intrusion, and false reporting to law enforcement, crimes committed over several years.
According to court documents, from March 2016 to December 2019, Uehara harassed and intimidated multiple victims. She assumed various identities to send threatening and harassing electronic communications to individuals, schools, and law firms. Uehara made threats to kill, harm, or extort her victims, and used others’ identities to create false email accounts, make false accusations, and send vulgar, harassing messages.
Uehara admitted to cyberstalking N.C., a former Albuquerque Public Schools student. She gained unauthorized access to N.C.’s Google and Twitter accounts, created fake accounts in N.C.’s name, sent hundreds of threatening messages impersonating N.C., obtained a restraining order against N.C. using fabricated evidence, and falsely reported N.C. to law enforcement, leading to N.C.’s arrest.
Additionally, Uehara admitted to making false statements to the FBI on July 28, 2016, and July 27, 2018, about her cyberstalking activities and the use of the TextNow app.
At sentencing, Uehara faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count of conviction. Following her release, she will be subject to up to three years of supervised release.
The FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory, Albuquerque Police Department, and Albuquerque Public Schools Police Department, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kimberly A. Brawley, Jaymie L. Roybal, and Eva F. Fontanez are prosecuting. U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and FBI Special Agent in Charge Raul Bujanda announced the plea.
