Albuquerque, NM – On September 20th, 2022, at approximately 1:23 pm, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputies were flagged down at 201 Rio Bravo Blvd SW in reference to a suspicious person inside a vehicle. Deputies tried to make contact with the person in the car but he fled and led them on a pursuit which eventually stopped. When the suspect Atkins got out of the car he pointed what deputies believed to be a weapon at a passing vehicle and they shot and killed him.

On October 10th, 2022, Sheriff Manny Gonzalez iii and officials from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s office held a press conference to discuss their latest deputy involved shooting. They also released body and dash camera footage from the incident.

Videos showed Deputies on scene attempted to make contact with the suspect after blocking the suspects vehicle with their own. When deputies tried to make contact the suspect fled in his vehicle, ramming three deputy units in the process. The suspect continued to flee westbound on Rio Bravo and turned southbound on Isleta Blvd. The suspect then crashed into two civilian vehicles causing his vehicle to become disabled near the intersection of Isleta Blvd Sw and Camino Del Valle SW.
45-year-old, Colby Atkins
The suspect eventually exited the vehicle and refused to comply with the deputy’s commands, and a confrontation ensued. Deputies discharged their duty issued firearms striking and killing the suspect. The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old, Colby Atkins. Atkins has an extensive criminal history. In 2020, Atkins was released from federal prison. At the time of the shooting, Atkins was in a stolen vehicle and had multiple active arrest warrants.
