On the evening of April 2, 2024, deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence located on the 12000 block of Palomas Ave NE following reports of a disturbance and a potential suicide threat. Around 11:00 pm, upon the deputies’ arrival, they encountered a male individual in a state of distress.
Afterward, deputies proceeded to another address on Corona Ave NE, where they made a troubling discovery: an elderly woman inside a residence, deceased under suspicious circumstances. Authorities secured both locations for further investigation.
Investigators have identified the deceased as the mother of the distressed male, who also acted as her primary caregiver. This intricate situation has prompted the initiation of a homicide investigation by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
BCSO has taken custody of James Colbert, identified as a 59-year-old. He faces charges including an open count of murder, failure to report a death, and tampering with evidence. The next of kin has been notified, and the investigation continues actively. Due to the sensitivity of this case, BCSO is currently limiting details.
The media were not alerted about this homicide until nearly 14 hours and 45 minutes after BCSO was called out.
Waiting like this to alert the press is odd for the sheriff. APD does dumb sneaky shit like this all the time.
What qualifies a case as sensitive? Victim and suspect are both adult. Next of kin has been notified. Seems like it might be a high profile person whom is involved.
