Albuquerque –
This afternoon, an officer from the Albuquerque Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop near Arizona and Lomas. At some point, the driver of the vehicle, which was reportedly a grey car, fired at the officer. Reportedly, no officers were hurt. The car fled after firing at police.*
The car that shot at police was potentially involved in a crash at San Mateo and Mescalero. However, the vehicle involved then fled from that incident. It is not confirmed if APD was able to establish a connection between the vehicle that caused the crash and the vehicle that discharged shots at the officers.
While on scene, we observed APD officers processing a grey Chrysler 300. The vehicle was also being towed. It is unsure how this car is connected to the incident.
APD detectives and crime scene specialists just finished collecting evidence at Lomas and Arizona.
If we learn more, we will update you.
UPDATE:
We have learned that two cars actually fired during this incident.
On November 23, 2024, an officer conducting a routine patrol near San Pedro Blvd and Lomas Blvd observed a silver Chrysler 300 with a New Mexico license plate. The vehicle’s registration was revealed to be suspended, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop. The driver stopped on Arizona St NE, north of Lomas Blvd. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, a front passenger, and three rear passengers.
Approaching the car, the officer noticed three spent casings visible through the un-tinted rear window. The driver provided a driver’s license but could not produce registration or proof of insurance. Suspecting the occupants might be armed and may have recently fired shots form the vehicle, the officer requested backup. A backup officer arrived to assist with questioning the passengers.
During the stop, a gray Hyundai sped past and fired gunshots after turning west onto Marble Ave. The officer that arrived as backup, they attempted to follow the Hyundai north on San Pedro Blvd, while the initial officer remained at the scene. Upon returning, the backup officer reported that a backseat passenger in the Chrysler 300 had been on a video call with someone in the fleeing Hyundai, suggesting a connection between the vehicles.
Evidence indicated shots had been fired from both the Chrysler and the Hyundai.
