Abandoned Warehouse Consumed by Flames Yet Again, At Least the Third Blaze Since 2021

Albuquerque –

On January 4, 2025 at 7:19am, Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to the large abandoned commercial building located at 1803 6th NW for reports of a possible structure fire. AFR Battalion 1 arrived on scene to find a large commercial building with an active fire. Crews reported defensive operations were necessary due to prior fire damage to the structure. It took 220 minutes (over three hours) to get the fire under control. Crews were cautious but had to make entry for fire control.

Primary and secondary searches of the structure yielded negative results. The building sustained significant damage, and a permit for demolition and removal is already on record. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is currently classified as accidental.

This structure has burned multiple times since 2021. There was a blaze here on August 8, 2024, and another fire on April 11, 2023. The response to the fire in 2023 needed 15 units and took over four hours to extinguish.

The warehouse, built in 1938, has rail access.

Previous fire damage, structural collapse, and the raised wood floor supported by dimensional lumber present significant challenges for firefighters in exposing and extinguishing hidden fire within this building. Crews conducted a trench cut across the warehouse floor to aid in extinguishment efforts. A major collapse has already occurred in the southwest corner, and teams will rotate through to thoroughly extinguish all remaining hot spots.
