Major Injury Crash on I-40 WB at University

Albuquerque –

The Albuquerque Police Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, and other local law enforcement agencies responded to a crash on I-40 Westbound at University around 7:15 AM. APD’s Traffic X account provided a report on this crash earlier this morning as well.

According to a viewer stuck in traffic, one of the vehicles involved is an SUV, which they claim has sustained major damage. Another person who drove past this incident stated that the SUV was facing this opposite direction of traffic. They also said a door on the SUV was purportedly missing. At the time of this posting, the crash appears to be in the right lane of traffic, with police and “Help Trucks” blocking the right lanes.

If you are still commuting to work at this hour and you need to take I-40 WB near University, you should seek an alternate route.

Please see the updates posted below.

UPDATE:

At 9:41 AM, the right lanes remain closed, as shown in the third photo.

A passerby reported believing the accident was fatal crash. The ongoing lane closures might be due to the police investigating a serious injury crash that could potentially be fatal.

UPDATE 2:

Unfortunately, the NMDOT cameras were relocated/re-positioned at 10:17 AM. As a result, we can no longer determine if the right lanes are still blocked.

We have reached out to authorities to see if they can provide us an update on this crash.

UPDATE 3:

We heard back from Albuquerque Fire Rescue’s Lt. Jason Fejer. He stated that the accident was categorized as a high mechanism motor vehicle crash with confirmed trapped patient. However, Lt. Fejer was not able to give an update or condition on the person inside of the vehicle.

  1. We drove by this at around 7:40-7:45am, if I remember correctly. The police had just arrived on the scene and were going to check on the person in the destroyed vehicle/SUV that was facing backwards. The person was conscious but was pinned inside. I’d really like to know if they’re okay!
