UPDATE:
We have since learned that officers were initially dispatched to this location in response to a report of a physical altercation between two individuals. However, as officers were en route to the call, witnesses reported that a vehicle struck a pedestrian. A bystander attempted life-saving measures, but the pedestrian, an adult male, died from his injuries.
According to APD, the vehicle that struck the man left the scene.
UPDATE 2:
This morning, we received an update from APD’s civilian PIO which stated:
“A preliminary investigation revealed that a homeless man was removed from a nearby restaurant (Thai Spice) by security personnel. The man was upset and walked across NM 528 from east to west. While standing in the third lane of southbound NM 528, the man remained stationary for a significant period. As a vehicle approached, the man laid down on the roadway, at which point the vehicle ran over him. The man sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by AFR personnel.
The vehicle involved, a red 1981 Honda Civic, entered the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. The driver spoke with responding officers, but left before investigators could question him.
The investigation remains ongoing.”
