Weekend of Mayhem in Albuquerque

This has weekend has seen a lot of mayhem and violence. On Saturday at around 2:30 PM, an armed burglary suspect fled from the Family Dollar on Broadway. The person reportedly brandished his gun, pointed it at an officer from the Albuquerque Police Department, and told the authorities he was not going back to jail. Ultimately, the suspect fled and hid in a shed on the 400 block of Arno. The suspect fired at least one round while he was in the shed, and an APD officer fired one round at some point striking the suspect. The APD SWAT team was eventually called out and they attempted to get the person to surrender. Their attempts were not successful, as at some point, the suspect was shot at after refusing to drop the gun and making some kind of motion, possibly with the firearm.

On Sunday morning, at around 3:00 AM, APD’s fatal crash team was called to the area of 47th and Central for a head-on crash. Initial reports indicate that a black Dodge truck was heading east on Central Avenue when it lost control near 47th Street SW, crossing into the westbound lanes. The truck collided head-on with a black Toyota Scion that was traveling westbound. The driver of the Toyota Scion suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the driver and passenger of the Dodge truck were taken to a nearby hospital.

Also on Sunday morning, when APD officers were responding to the crash at Central and 47th, they were advised about a fatal shooting on 5th and Gold. At this scene, authorities found one person fatally shot and another with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The injured victim was transported to a local hospital.

Lastly, on Sunday at around 2:40 PM, two individuals were stabbed at Civic Plaza.

UPDATE:

It has been reported that a stabbing incident occurred on Wyoming Blvd yesterday. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent and severity of their injuries is currently unknown.

An earlier version stated 900 block of Alvarado NE. It should have been 900 block of Alvarado SE.

  1. The incident where 3 people were shot in ABQ on Sunday afternoon occurred on the 900 block of Alvarado SOUTHEAST, not NE, as reported. Please correct this, as it appears as NE multiple times, between headlines, subheadings, and within the articles. Publishing the wrong information, especially wrong address, causes confusion among residents of both neighborhoods, and can seriously damage the image of the neighborhood where the crime did not occur. For example, I am a real estate broker and I was supposed to show a client 2 homes that are for sale in the neighborhood that surrounds the 900 block of Alvarado NORTHEAST. My clients get their local news from your site and canceled their appointment with me at the last minute, thinking that these shootings or homicides had just occurred only 2 blocks from the first house that I was supposed to meet them at and about 4 blocks from the one we were going to see after the first. So, something as small as the wrong direction at the end of an address can literally take money out of that neighborhood, or drive away would-be homebuyers that would be an asset to the community, or causes unnecessary worry and anxiety among existing residents and their close family or friends that don’t live in the area. It disrupts people’s plans and free time. It raises false red flags for visitors. It makes people stay locked up inside their homes rather than present and active in their community, something that ABQ is in desperate need of. Misinformation spreads quickly and many people don’t see corrections if and when they are made. Please consider proof reading articles before publishing them. From typos to missing or incorrect punctuation or poorly worded statements, there are corrections needed in most of the articles on your site that I was readying. Otherwise, you coverage and range of stories is good.

  2. The man who was shot did not have a gun. He was my father. He was trying to call me from his cell phone. When he was shot to death. It was a murder. They lied about it being a weapon. He had just got off parole and was on the streets.. he was on his way to go into a shelter. This is a homicide and being covered up by the police department. Shame on you
