BCSO Sheriff Disputes Accuracy of APD’s Media Release Related to Fatal Crash Involving a Deputy

Albuquerque – Around mid morning, APD sent out an update about two fatal crashes that happened early in the morning of August 7th, 2024. One of the incidents involved a BCSO deputy and a suspect of a pursuit which resulted in a fatality. The release APD issued stated that the vehicle brake checked the Deputy’s fully marked police SUV.

In a release, BCSO Sheriff John Allen disputes the series of events and the brake check comment:

“In the early hours of August 7, 2024, a serious incident involving a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office field unit and a civilian vehicle occurred at the intersection of Alameda Road N.E. and Edith Blvd. N.E. I am deeply saddened by the outcome of this event, which tragically resulted in the loss of a life.

To ensure the integrity of the investigation into this incident, I have requested that the Albuquerque Police Department take the lead in conducting a thorough and unbiased inquiry. It is crucial that the investigation is handled externally to maintain its impartiality and thoroughness.

Following the incident, the deputy involved was placed on administrative leave, in accordance with our standard operating procedures. This is a routine step in any serious incident and should not be interpreted as a prejudgment of the deputy’s actions.

Unfortunately, the preliminary information released by APD contains inaccuracies. Specifically, there was no mention by the deputy of a brake check or the vehicle being suspicious. After reviewing the radio transmissions, it is clear that these details were mistakenly included. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office prioritizes the accuracy and integrity of information provided to the public. We strive to correct any discrepancies swiftly to ensure public communication is factual and transparent.

Preliminary information indicates that the deputy attempted a traffic stop on a Silver Honda Accord observed driving erratically and at high speeds. The driver initially fled from the attempted stop. Our deputy did not engage in a pursuit but remained in the vicinity to monitor for further incidents. Subsequently, the deputy observed the vehicle again, still driving erratically, and attempted a second traffic stop. Shortly after this attempt was communicated via radio, the crash occurred at the intersection of Alameda Road N.E. and Edith Blvd. where the driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation, and we are committed to full cooperation with the Albuquerque Police Department to ascertain all facts surrounding this incident. We ask for patience and understanding as the investigative process is thorough and will take time to ensure all aspects are carefully considered. While the initial release from APD did not align with our expectations, I have full confidence in the APD Traffic Unit and their capability to conduct a thorough and accurate investigation.” – Sheriff John Allen

It should be noted that APD’s public information office does not have any sworn law enforcement officers within their ranks and sometimes the information they release is not exactly accurate when it comes to investigative details.
