On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, California resident, Mario A. Serna, received a 151-month federal prison sentence for attempting to transport over 2 kilograms of heroin by train. There is no parole in the federal system.
According to authorities, Serna was caught on a train traveling from Bernalillo County, New Mexico, to North Carolina, with the heroin hidden in a fake compartment of his bag. He admitted to knowingly possessing and planning to distribute the drugs.
After serving his prison term, Serna will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigated this case with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD). Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph M. Spindle prosecuted this case
